My baby is 4 weeks old and I'm nursing. When she nurses she is really fussy and she wont sleep. I'm just trying to figure out if she is cranky because she was up for a while or could it be because she had a bottle of formula yesterday or because I ate some sour cream yesterday and she has a belly ache. I am lactose intolerant and my other daughter was when she was little. I can eat small amounts of dairy but not a lot.
I just switched from regular formula to soy, maybe that's it? Any advice? If it's gas or a belly ache how long will the crankiness last?

I nurse 99% of the time but I just give her a bottle when I go out with her.

For starters, your hurting your milk supply and possibly introducing something that is hard for your baby to digest when you give her formula.
Breastmilk is easy to digest and research shows that dairy is the only thing that can cause digestive distress in the infant.
Typically infants have a growth spurt at around 2 weeks and 6 weeks... this will coincide with a bout of fussiness and increased appetite. Don't listen to those who will try to tell you that you don't make enough milk. Your baby's increased feedings are getting your milk supply up.
Nursing on demand will keep your baby happy. And don't be scared to nurse in public! Nursing moms need to come out of the closet!

Missing a nap can certainly make a baby cranky. Just think how you feel when you don't get enough sleep. ;-)

I'm willing to bet that it's actually probably the formula though, especially if she isn't used to it.

If you aren't comfortable nursing in public, can you pump a bottle of your milk for her? Or maybe a La Leche League Leader, or experienced nursing friend or a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) could work with you to help you feel more confident about nursing in public? Maybe nursing in front of a mirror would allow you to see how very little others actually see when you nurse and make you feel better?

Some babies are affected by what mom eats and others aren't. Sour cream wouldn't matter much unless you have been on a dairy eliminate diet. If you were already eating other dairy products, sour cream probably makes no difference at all. (To correct another poster, most babies LOVE when their moms eat garlic as it makes the milk very sweet and they often will nurse MORE, not less if mom has had garlic.)

BTW...edited to say...if she's fussy, nurse her. It's very comforting to her and there is nothing wrong with nursing her for comfort.

My daughter was never full with breast milk. She would fuss & whine cuz she was never full. That could be why. She probably has a belly ache. If her cry tells you "I'm in pain" then try to rub her belly real easy to kick in her digestive system. This will allow her to pass gas & make her tummy stop hurting. Also push her knees into her belly a little bit. If her cry is a sleepy cry, give her a bottle of soy formula & try to rock her to sleep. My daughter was lactose intolerant cuz my husband was. It was horrible until we all got adjusted. Just go with your insticts. If nothing seems to make her feel better, perhaps see her pediatrician. If it is a belly ache it will last until she passes the gas or has a bowel movement. There is so much to say here but this barely covers it. Best of luck to you. Remember she is crying cuz she has no other way to communicate. Try to listen for cues that she is tired or in pain. If she rubs her eyes or her eyes close while she is crying, shes probably sleepy. If its a sharp piercing cry, she is probably having a tummy ache.

could be colic.. colic starts around 3 weeks. I would rule out the sour cream possibility. Im sure that is not the connection, and soy formula wouldnt cause this problem either. Sometimes if you give a nursing baby to someone else to rock for a while, the crying stops. The baby can smell the milk on you, and even if it is not time to feed, she still fusses for it. So let someone else hold her for awhile, or simply lay her down in a safe place and see after a few minutes if she does fall asleep. Newborn babies arent known for their easy-going personalities. good luck!

Most kids and Babys are cranky if they don't take a nap. I breastfeed my 2 babys, and it was the best thing I could do for them, but what you eat, she will eat. So if you think it is gas, I would give her some gas relief stuff, and they do have it for babys. I had to use it often for my oldest, and it works!! I would give her a half of a dose before she eats, and the other half after she is done eating, (Breastfeeding) Its not harmful. That might help. Good Luck to you and your new Baby!! Also check with a pharmacy at Walmart or Walgreen's, they can help.

My daughter is exactly like yours (how fortunate are you allowed to be! LOL). anyhow, even as she all started getting the first enamel she were given quite cranky about 3-4 days before i in my view observed or felt a enamel. I took her for walks, which looked as if it would assist. tried the frozen washcloth yet she ought to care a lot less. when I placed her to mattress at nighttime I gave her a small does of Tylenol to take the soreness before giving her a bathtub and by technique of the time she had her bathtub the Tylenol had kicked in and he or she felt top a nap. If the Tylenol facilitates it ought to o.k. be her teething. do not overuse the Tylenol, in spite of the indisputable fact that. If used too a lot, Tylenol can smash someone's' liver.

Yes a baby can be more cranky if it misses its nap. Babys need their sleep. So you should try to get him/her to sleep. I know its hard sometimes. But you just have to keep on trying. Good luck
