They didn't steal it in Italy!
The Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911 from the Louvre. Suspects in the case were French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who had once called for the Louvre to be "burnt down," and Pablo Picasso. Both were later released. It turned out that Louvre employee Vincenzo Peruggia hid in the museum at closing time and the next morning cut the painting from its frame and walked out the door with it hidden under his coat. The theft was planned by a con man who had commissioned an art forger to make copies of the painting that he could sell as the missing original. Because he decided he didn't need the original, he failed to contact Peruggia. After keeping the painting in his apartment for two years, Peruggia grew impatient. He was finally caught when he attempted to sell it to an art dealer. The Mona Lisa was returned to the Louvre.

Well, the Louvre owns it, so the Mona Lisa belongs there.
I don't think it would be a good idea if all the museums in the world only kept artwork created by their national artists. Think about it: you should go to Italy to see Leonardo's paintings, to France to see Monet's, to Holland to see Van Gogh's, to Spain to see Picasso's, to the USA to see Pollock's, etc, etc. Museums are so great because they display a little bit of everything. So, even people who don't have money to travel around can get to see art from all over the world.

this has nothing to do with football....
but as an art historian, i have to say that this debate has been going on for many many years...the problem is that museums all over the world own works of art that are from artists that come from different countries. if you return one thing, you will have to return so much more art....museums would be practically empty around the world and people would never get to see certain works of art by certain artists without travelling the globe.
and then what about artists who were born in one country but lived and worked in another?? for example, pablo picasso is spanish but lived and worked in france. so who gets his art??
art has been stolen for centuries from other countries and it seems impossible to try to return it all to its respective countries....frankly, i dont believe that it should be.

naaaa, they should give it to me, I'd eat it with some peanut butter and rid the world of that freaking topic of conversation once and for all, and while I'm at it, I'd burn the rain forest to stop ppl from making a big deal about it.
Vote for me for the next World President.
A vote for me is a vote for ME!!!
