PNC Bank is the largest bank in western pennsylvania and the 11th largest in the United States. The were originally Pittsburgh National Bank and purchased an insurance and financial services company called Pittsburgh National Corporation. Their name was briefly changed to Pittsburgh National City. Today the letters do not actually stand for anything, they are just letters (like KFC) It is meant to reflect the idea that they are more than just a bank. Many PNC employees joke today that the PNC actually stands for Pending Name Change....

The sponsor was once called Pittsburgh National Bank. It expanded into other areas and changed company name to Pittsburgh National Corporation.

PNC is the large bank here that paid megabucks for the naming rights to the stadium, which btw, is considered one of the best in the country.
