Many years ago when I lived in West Virginia, up near the Ohio river, I had heard tales of actual gargoyles that supposedly lived in the caves near what is called TNT. I think it is close to Point Pleasant and Mason W VA. I don't know if this is the actual name of the area or a nickname. Being originally from NC, that was news to me at the time. I have always wondered but never had the chance to find out myself. Does anyone else know about this or heard tales of the West Virginia gargoyles.

A gargoyle is a stone sculpture you find on buildings that usually have a water spout coming from their mouths. Basically, they were a way to dress up the gutters. They are supposed to be representations of a particular dragon called The Gurgler who, according to legend, sat on top of a castle spouting water from his mouth until he was finally killed. The idea that gargoyles are anything but what I described above is a purely 20th century idea and I doubt very highly that actual living gargoyles exist.

It's way more likely that you're hearing a twisted version of a wild man story or demon story.

a gargoyle is a gothic architectural flourish, not a supposed or real creature. please look it up. that's what the internet is for. maybe you're thinking of gremlins or something like that. to see a gargoyle, go to downtown NYC or San Francisco, and look up at the tops of the skyscrapers. many are adorned with gargoyles. so are some cathedrals in the same cities (as well as many cities in Europe).

About a decade ago there was a really cool cartoon titled Gargoyles. They aren't real though.

Actually, I believe that gargoyles are just statues outside of churches, believed to fend off evil spirits and such.

They are mythical creatures that you see often on Euopean churches. They are supposed to ward of demons and protect the church.
