This is a new problem and I have the car for my children to drive. I am concerned about it being safe for them. I want to have some ideas as to the reason for this before I go to a mechanic. I live in the Bahamas and car work is VERY expensive!

Most likley you have a worn drive shaft universal joint it jerks because the excessive play in the joint has to be taken up.This is somthing that can easily be seen if vechicle is on a ramp.Regards mick

most likely a tranny problem.

try having the it serviced. a fluid change might be all it needs.
you can also check the timing and idle spead.
it sounds like the engine is rev'd up and the tranny engages harshly.
if the idle is high, you might also feel a small bump when you go from drive or reverse into neutral or park.

are you speaking about each of the time or only on dry roads,this can be force line binding because you have become no slippage the different component it must be is tires that are missmatched length smart,as in 2 worn ones and a pair of more recent ones does the steerage launch on ice or snow,if it does then binding is one in each of the reason

the issue is definitely in the transmission. your gears may need some work, especially if you usually shift quickly. when is the last time you replaced your transmission fluid?

Idle is set to high

could be the transmissions going out
