Interestingly enough, your question only addresses the outward manifestations of gender. However, besides the immediate thrill or horror, the real issue is that you would be whatever gender you had been before, at least internally, assuming you were not already a transsexual, a mind oriented to the wrong body. Would that be a thrill and for how long?
After the novelty wears off, could anyone be truly comfortable in the body of the other sex? I sincerely doubt it. I think most people would feel an uncontrollable emptiness, something like being condemned to repeat high school for the rest of your life as a freshman.
Although most people are not anywhere near 100% masculine or feminine, the issue is how one could adapt to the new gender. This involves much more than learning how to walk in high heels or being able to throw a baseball; even with as much as the roles of men and women have become blurred in the modern age, I think it would be sheer hell for most people to change their sex. Studies of transsexuals reveal that not even those who believe they are transsexuals and pursue it for many years can adapt well in some cases.
Each of us can see some benefit in being the other gender at one time or another and I doubt there is any one who hasn't thought about it. No doubt we all are at least curious as to why the other gender acts in a certain way and how it would feel to do certain things as the other sex. But one's sexual identity is more than outward appearance; it might be nice to discover answers, even if they were available just by the biological changes, but I suspect that each of us, beyond a few who seem to enjoy perversity as a career, would ever be very comfortable as the other sex.
Lastly, I believe that we would find certain things with which we are uncomfortable now just as uncomfortable, if not more so, as the opposite sex. If you are a wallflower now, that doesn’t get changed. If you aren’t charismatic as you are, how would changing sex make it different? Maybe that’s why people want to believe in magic: that way we don’t have to go through the difficult process of changing things we don’t like about ourselves.
