When it comes to giving & receiving gifts, does the mere fact that "it was the thought that counts" really suffice enough to make a gift good?

I am not being ungrateful towards a real gift I have received or anything - just wanting your thoughts about whether that sentence holds true, or is it just a "safety" line you can use for otherwise horrible gifts.

i think it holds true if the person giving the gift put a lot of thought into it. like for instance, i gave my aunt a letter for a christmas present, talking about my feelings towards her. she said it was the most touching present she ever got. as long as the gift is from the heart that saying holds true

It depends on who it is, honestly. If it comes from someone that I'm not too fond of, I don't care how much thought they put in to it, but my ex-boyfriend never had any money and he always made me something or bought me something really cheap, but it meant the world to me, because HE meant the world to me.

For me it is the thought, just the fact that someone remembered my birthday or something like that makes me feel good!
