Running, but unfortunately you can not run through second and third, and running through is not a very good way to avoid a tag. Ideally, staying on your feet would be best for the quickness, but sliding to avoid a tag or avoid running past the base is necessary in many situations.

Keep running. You slow down to slide, which also sets you up to get hurt.

Sliding into first is stupid personally. Run in foul territory and if the first basemen gets in the way it's legal to go through him. You'll get there fast on 2 legs than your butt or chest.

Sliding is used to (1) avoid a tag and (2) avoid overrunning a base - by slowing you down.

Sliding is NEVER faster.

And at first base where you are allowed to overrun, the only reason to slide is to avoid a tag.

Keep running, sliding slows you down but makes you harder to tag on.

It all depends on the situation...Throw being high and off the bag...go ahead and DIVE for the base.

A player should never slide into first, that is by far the slowest way...however I strongly condone DIVING for first.
