I'm with the other girl, get a 2nd opinion.
But if the other dentist thinks you need them, then do it when you are covered by your parent's insurance.
Your teeth don't just need to "look" nice they need to fit together well too. Your bite affects how your teeth wear, and any potential jaw pain. Which can cause headaches etc. as you get older.
There are some new options you can think about though. See if you are a candidate. There is a small oral surgery procedure that may cut down the amount of time you need to spend in braces.
You may be a candidate for "invisalign" Basically clear thin plasic molded to fit a model of your teeth that you wear 24/7 like braces, but are invisable, Our CEO had them I stood like 2 feet from him and never saw it, even once I knew and looked for it. But they are more expensive.
If you have to do "wire" braces see if you can do "white" braces, the "brackets" are white, and the bands are clear, so all you see is the thin wire. I had those, most people didn't know I had braces because the way my mouth is they don't show much when I talk.
Then when you get off the braces talk to your orthodontist about a perminant retainer. I have one on the bottom. It is basically like a "braces" wire that is glued directly to your teeth. You have to be extra good about flossing around it. But it is stuck on the BACK side of the teeth, nothing shows up front. After a few weeks you forget it is there.
Good Luck

Try checking out another orthodontist for another opinion. A cool place to go (depending on where you live) is someplace like a university hospital or dental center, such as Loma Linda University Hospital in Loma LInda, California. The reason I suggest this is because at a university, you will end up with consultations from several doctors/dentists, especially if your condition is unusual. The intern students might be doing the work, but you will have a few very experienced doctors working out a diagnosis and prognosis for your condition.
Another advantage is that a university hospital will be fairly inexpensive compared to a private practitioner.

http://www.teethgap.com/pictures.htm Try this web site. I did and have been thankful for doing so. If you're happy with the way you look then I wouldnt worry. I'm 44 years old. I HAD a gap in my two front bottom and two front top teeth. I feared a dentist so this was a dream come true for me. Top and bottom teeth now touch and I can smile a mile and talk a leg off without feeling like my teeth are center of attention, well at least now I dont mind if they are :D. I wish you the very best in what ever you do :).

well, why not just stick with it, especially since you're still in high school and your parents can pay still if they want. i'll have braces still until the end of my soph yr of college or longer, but i know a woman in her fourties who has them and as much as i hate them, i'm just glad i'm not her. also, i didn't think i needed them that badly until the orthodontist pointed out all the ways my teeth are messed up, and they look so much better after a year of wearing braces. i sympathize with you because you're dilemma does suck, but i would just go with it if i were you because your smile will look even better once you're through, and it could be much worse. having braces in high school shouldn't be a big deal, just accept it and it's not that bad.

if you wore you retainer every day until he told you to only wear it nights, and every night, nothing should be wrong with your teeth, i have braces and i really dont care what guys think about me
if u think u look good in braces, then you do , if you dont trust yourself, ask your friends what they think

DONT WAIT UNTIL YOU GRADUATE BECAUSE THEN YOU GO TO COLLEGE OMG NO THAT WOULD BE HORRIBLE...i had braces for 4 years, i was praying i would get them off before senior year and i did....did you ask your dentist or orthodontist about invisiline? Try asking them about that. Ummm i dunno, i think if you need braces, you should get them and its better now then when you get older cuz when you get older youll have to wear them longer. But you might want to get another opnion.

Hey braces are cute ;) Personally though if it were me i wouldn't even bother getting them at all if your teeth look straight and everything. There's also those clear braces that they have (forgot the name), you could look into that as well.

Get a second and third opinion. I think your dentist is either milking your insurance or he does not have a clue.

I think you should get a second opinion, sounds like your orthodontist may want to scam you out of money....
