In 1948, they were invaded by Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Iran. And Israel won.
In 1967, they went to war with Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria. And Israel won.
The Israelis are bad dudes.

I've seen this movie before...Israel occupied portions of Lebanon for 10 years. No one Arab nation has the military strength to stand up to Israel for more than a few days. The question is, will the international community allow Israel to do what it feels is consistent with its right to defend itself? My guess is no.
Other Arab nations have already begun to cast their allegiances in the conflict, and Iran and Syria (who have a mutual protection treaty) are siding with Hezbollah. If either or both of those countries gets involved, so will the US in support of Israel. If Iran actually declares war, other countries like China and Russia may side with Iran (directly or indirectly) due to their trade agreements. The EU seems to be fence-sitting, but if things get serious they will probably side with the US and Israel.
Does this sound to anyone else like a recipe for a World War? I don't think (hope) it will get that far, although who knows. The Islamist militants are not likely to compromise on their position one bit. I think the hope lies in the governments of Lebanon and Palestine. If they can manage to get their countries under control and shake hands with Israel, this may all go away (for a while at least).

Lebanon does not really have a military. Israel has a very strong military with nuclear weapons.

Lebanon is under blockade so no new weapons can get in. Israel has one of the strongest militaries in the world including a very powerfull air force. May not end quickly....but it's not hard to see where this one is going.
