Startup Control Panel is your answer.

I have used this on dozens of PC's. I actually prefer it to msconfig (which doesn't work in Win2K) even on WinXP systems. It covers more, and is easier to use. It's free and very, very simple to install and use.

Programs used to install links to the Startup folder so that Windows will load them up automatically after booting up. However, since this enables users to easily remove the links themselves, software developers are now eschewing the use of the Startup folder. Instead, they are directly adding the links to the registry so that users won't be able to remove them easily.

Well, that's okay if those programs are those that you require quick access to all the time. However, quite a few programs out there do nothing but sap resources right from boot up till shut down. If you would like to remove these programs so that they won't load up and remain in the background (tray) after boot up, here's how you can remove them.

Open up Registry Editor (Start Menu -> Run -> regedit).

In Registry Editor, go to My Computer -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run.

Select the program you want removed, right click and choose Delete.

Once removed, Windows 2000 will no longer load this program at start up.

Close Registry Editor and restart Windows 2000 for the changes to take effect.

EDIT: Windows 2000 does not have msconfig. So you cant type msconfig on the RUN command.

**** You dont want to install another program just for startup controls. It will just lag your computer more. Its another headache to add to your computer ****

Downlaod spybot S&D! It is a free spyware removal program with loads of extra features in the tools menu - one of the tools is a program that contrals what programs start up on system boot-up, it also tells you what company the programs originate from, what they do and whether or not you should remove them.

controltheweb above is 100 % correct. StartupCPL is the only way to go for controlling what runs at boot time. In addition to everything he said StartupCPL even makes it a snap to add things that you do want to start a boot time.
