why can't i view my buddies avatar?

They need to set it in their preference to SHARE the avatar with their buddies before you can view it. Tell your buddy to click on the avatar part of the messenger, and there should be an option to "SHARE AVATAR" and then you should be able to see it. It might also help if you close the IM window and let your buddy IM you again so that the window pops up again.
Sometimes when you have a different version of messenger than the buddy you are talking to, then you will not be able to see their buddy avatar or their picture. Make sure you are both compatible with each other.

they have to put one up, for a start.
and they have to click to share it with other people
