Sometimes there is no difference as one can be both a patriot and a terrorist. The patriot loves his country and may do anything to protect or establish it. A patriot may be a hero in some communities and a despised terrorist in others. Patriots and terrorists have been called freedom fighters, gorillas, insurgents, etc. It is just a matter of perspective.

Many differences, but among the big ones are that a patriot is a citizen of a country under duress and targets the military or government that is somehow threatening his/her country. A terrorist isn't even necessarily a citizen of the country in which he/she does the acts of terror AND a terrorist targets anyone indiscriminately, including innocent civilians. Not to say that a patriot might not kill civilians in the process of warring against the enemy, but he/she does NOT target them and attempts to avoid those situations if possible.

If you are fighting enemy combatants, you are a freedom fighters. if you shoot up a marketplace, bomb a coffee house or slam a jet into an office tower, you are a murdering terrorist. There is a big difference. The latter three acts describe just some of acts that so-called mujahadin have committed (usually against other Muslims as is usually the case in Iraq) in the name of being patriots, but if the shoe fits, wear it

It is a question of your aim and means that one adopts for achieving that. The main question is what is the end result of terrorism? Has it achieved its desired aim and then if that is the final end result. In my view it leads to frustration and then again cycle goes on.
