Question: Why is population the smallest unit that can evolve?

Choose a, b, c, d, or e. Thanks.

Need some people strong in biology/evolution!

Here are the choices: I've looked up this question for hours online and have read my books. Really interested to know. Need to know for my assignment.

a. Species from different populations do not interbreed.
b. All methods of evolution require chromosomes from more than one organism
c. Offspring of organisms within two populations provide sufficient genetic material to permit evolution of the species to occur.
d. Mutations can only occur across multiple population members.
e. Multiple diploid gamates are required to provide a foundation for the change.

Thanks for everyone's help!!!!

There are some parts of the question & choices that don't make a lot of sense, from what I gather, this is my answer.

****

Why is population the smallest unit that can evolve?

a. Species from different populations do not interbreed.
( I don't see how this would influence evolution in a population).
WRONG

b. All methods of evolution require chromosomes from more than one organism.
(This is simply wrong, self-replicating organisms such as yeast do evolve and there is only one parent.)
WRONG

c. Offspring of organisms within two populations provide sufficient genetic material to permit evolution of the species to occur.
(We are talking about a single population, why are we discussing two groups here? And we don't know anything about the genetic makeup of two organisms of different populations and how the genetic material is going to be combined).
WRONG

d. Mutations can only occur across multiple population members.

(Not true, individual members could end up with a small mistake and thus have a mutation; also not all mutations are expressed).
WRONG

e. Multiple diploid gametes are required to provide a foundation for the change.

(Gametes are haploid, diploid gametes occur when there is an incorrect meiosis cycle . . . this could lead to change, especially in plants, these individuals are called “Heteroploids”, and the heteroploids are very different from the normal plants, heteroploids also happen in animals but animals are much more sensitive to such a huge change that the zygote will never make it to adulthood)
Possibly right.

I don’t know why you are choosing C, vee.
Your reasoning is right, but I don’t see why you are choosing C.

Lets say there are two isolated populations who have acquired mutations, if they interbreed (i.e. two individuals from different populations breed the mutation is less likely to express itself and there will be no visible change, in other words there will be NO phenotypical expression of the mutation.)

Ok if I uderstood the question right, i would say that the answear is e, the other ones don't make much sense to me.

The reason because the smallest unit that can evolve is a population is because is the only way that a mutation can be inherited to the offspring of this population, you need multiple diploid gamets, so there's more chance that the trait can de passed on to next generations, if there is only one individual that has the mutation is easier for that trait to get lost, but if a lot of them have it, then you can guarantee that the trait will be passed on.

Hope it helps.

The POPULATION is the smallest unit where evolutionary change is possible, because populations permit the origin of new alleles through mutation, and the change in the frequency of alleles through selection, genetic drift, etc.

Answer is C. And also B is almost the same thing..question is not phrased well. But If i were you i would choose C.

Hope it helped..ok good luck.
