Why do women have period pain? What exactly happens inside? Is it the muscles aching? Then how come your entire body hurts aswel including back, legs and hips? And how come some women dont have period pain at all?!

Yes, it is your uterus contracting, and the muscles in it also use some of your back muscles ect. in order to work. kind of like moving your wrist alot and your forearm gets sore.

And the pain does not neccicarily stop after you have children or get older. I have horrible debilitating cramps and asked my doctor if it would improve and he said that it actually would get worse. (Oh joy.) Each woman is an individual case.

Some women don't hav pain at all because either their muscles have become used to it, or just don't contract as hard. They tend to have longer lighter periods though.

Different people have different kinds of pains, me I get really bad stomach aches and the only way I can ease it is by using a hot water bottle and tablets. Some say exercise helps but I dont think so. Its the uterus contracting and getting rid of the bad blood. Think its also got something to do with the eggs travelling down the overies? I wish men could feel the pain too sometimes, then they know what us women have to go through!! I sometimes get a bad stitch on one side too, thats just as painful.

It's your uterus contracting and if you're experiencing pain in your back, hips and legs it's because all the parts of your body link into each other. So when your uterus contracts badly, it's affects the muscles around too.
As for the other symptoms like migraines, it's linked to the rise and fall of certain hormones.
And some women don't have period pain because everyone is different and their uterus might not contract as much.

Kicker's right - it's your uterus contracting. It's the same thing that happens when you give birth, but less pronounced.

If it's any consolation it will stop once you have a baby and/or get older. I rarely get them now (aged 36).

Don't know why your legs and back hurt though - good question. It could be referred pain. When I was in labour all the pain was in the top of my legs and back - all the other mums on the ward said the same thing.

Lots of paracetamol and a hot water bottle. Fun being a woman, isn't it??!!
