With all of these "buy a home abroad" programmes on tv, I have started to wonder whether it could be a good investment. However I have heard good & bad, so would very much like anybody that has bought abroad to give me their view (rather than an estate agent) on where to buy, costs, the realistic side of things really. Thank you!

I live in Spain, I am from Leeds and moved here 4 years ago, it is realistic, and a very good investment, there are good and bad things but as long as u buy from a reputable estate agent then u will be fine.I live on the Costa Blanca southern Spain, the prices have gone up so much over the past 5 years since owning our home, but it all depends on what ur wanting, for example a 3 bedroomed detached house with a modest amount of land (enough to put a swimming pool in) will cost around €250,000 to €350,000 but a semi detached house of the same would be about €50,000 less. An apartment or a quad is the cheapest to buy right now and will cost in the region of around €120,000 to €200,000. There is usually a 20% deposit and 7% taxes. The deposit comes off the price of ur house and u pay that when u decide to buy it, its non refundable, and the taxes is what u pay at the end on top of ur house, this u pay to the notary when u pay for ur house. Hope this helps.

Septic tanks very rarely exist these day's, they may exist in France but here in Spain they only exist way out in the middle of no where. We have perfectly good running water and Sewage is no problem, it is released from ur house the same way as in England, away from the house and into a Sewage house that is pumped away and cleaned up.

My parents have a place in Bordeaux but it's not a house. They have a static caravan, it may as well be a chalet it's that big. It also proved 75% cheaper than buying a house and they also rent it out over the summer when they aren't there. The problem with houses abroad is that alot of them don't have a septic tanks and it costs alot to put them in. They pay £200 a year to keep it on a site with a bar, restaurant and swimming pools. That's gas electric and water aswell.
It's cheaper and a lot less hassle to have a caravan than a house.
