Last time my big brother went to the doctor for an ingrown toenail, they cut a V shape into the nail so that it will grow back together, pulling the sides of the nail back up. They also put this medicine called "black save" on it which softens up the skin and nail enough to use tweezers to pull it out.

Both of these things you can probably do at home UNLESS your toe is turning yellow or black. This means it is infected. Then a doctor will need to prescribe you some antibiotics and remove the nail. Don't worry though, I am sure the doctor will use some type of med to dull the pain.

The doctors will cut it out of your toe. They will give you a shot to numb the toe and then they will take a pair of scissor looking things and cut it out. The only thing you feel while the are doing it is alot of pressure. Then they will wrap it with gauze and tell you to keep that on until you take a shower that night. They will also tell you that while you in the shower rub the skin back where they removed the ingrown so that it doesn't heal with the skin pushed up causing another ingrown.

Probably remove the toenail, at least the infected part, and give meds. But I don't know for sure.

my brother had his removed, but they give you a shot to numb it first. It's best to go to the doctor before it gets infected. If you catch it early they can just give you some medicine to help the pain.
