I think you should keep a tab on the prices being offered for the tickets to India. Anything around US $ 1000 for return journey should be a good deal. Prices in Fab / Mar are the least to/from India.
After Diwali festival, prices come down significantly as the festival / socialising season take a pause in India for a couple of months, so the traffic reduces and airlines start offering deals.

Ask the travel agent if that was a published fare or a consolidator fare?
It might be too early to book a consolidator ticket, but ask them to see if they can get an estimate.
I would think that within the next month, they should be selling cheaper tickets for that timeperiod. 1600 is a lot.
