A lot of the popular horoscopes that you read in newspapers and online are typically generated using a personality model rather than "reading the stars". Looking at the stars and determining your fate from them would be so incredibly time-consuming that it couldn't possibly be done every day. If a person writing the horoscope is looking at the stars (which, let's be honest, most of them don't) they usually work up a star chart by month...sometimes weekly, but not often.
Usually, newspaper and magazine horoscopes are generally based on how that particular writer is feeling that day. It's obviously going to be true for someone, somewhere on that day. That someone might just be you. Also, the belief factor comes into play. If you believe it applies to you, then it probably will, our minds have a great mechanism for psyching us up like that.

They are interpreted using solar charts and current transits of the planets, current aspects between the transiting planets with a lot of creativity thrown in for the interpretation.
The horoscopes in the newspapers and online are actually based on your Ascendant, the sign on the first house cusp, not your Sun sign, which is one of the reasons why they are inaccurate. The other thing to note is that they are not personalized to your date, place and time of birth. The majority of the readers out there do not know their Ascendant sign, so they are told to read their horoscope for their Sun sign, which is incorrect. You should actually be reading for your Ascendant sign.
This is how solar charts work:
Aries on the first house, Taurus on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for an Aries Ascendant.
Taurus on the first house, Gemini on the 2nd house amd so on through the 12 houses for a Taurus Ascendant.
Gemini on the first house, Cancer on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Gemini Ascendant.
Cancer on the first house, Leo on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Cancer Ascendant.
Leo on the first house, Virgo on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Leo Ascendant.
And so on throughout all 12 sign of the zodiac.
Now throw in the planets in signs, planets in houses and their aspects and interpret the charts on a daily basis.
Bingo, you have a horoscope for online and in newspapers.
The best I have ever read are by Georgia Nicols. She's not into fluff and tries to interpret the Astrology using planets in houses and by aspect, although the lay person won't realize that.
Read for your Ascendant!

they look at the stars and their relation to the star signs, then take into consideration the other aspects of astrology, like characteristics and personality traits to make them
think about that last comment. if one person reads the stars on monday and says one thing, another person reading THE SAME stars is gonna have the same conclusion because IT'S THE SAME DAY
