Forgot to mention that Futurama's coming back in 2008, and 20th Century Fox does both of them. Like the cartoon, maybe with the DVD sales of Firefly, it can get them to produce new episodes?

First note that I am a long-time fan of Joss Whedon, and a fan of the Firefly-verse.

That said, don't confuse Fox Network, which aired then cancelled the original show, with 20th Century/Fox - the studio that produced the show.

They are part of the same company, yes, but they have different business models. Networks need ratings for their shows in order to sell advertising. Studios basically get their profits from successful shows they have produced after those shows go into syndication (requires multiple seasons for success) and/or are released to DVD (even a half-season works).

After Fox Network cancelled the show because of poor ratings (and Firefly's ratings were poor, even by Fox's standards), Whedon tried to shop the show around to other networks. If he had found another network to run the show, 20th Century/Fox would have continued producing the show.

He didn't find an alternate network. End of story.

The mediocre, at best, success of the film means that the show is not coming. And Joss, cast, and crew have moved on with their lives and careers (but "Mammoth"? - why, Summer, why?).

I expect 5-10 years down the road they will come back and do a "Firefly - The Geezers" reunion film, either for box office or television. That should be fun.

Don't get me wrong. I really liked the show. But it's not coming back.

Firefly was probably one of the best written television shows ever and the cast was great! Unfortunately, I do not see it coming back because the movie did so poorly in the box office.

I would LOVE to see it return but I am not hopeful.

Doubtful, but I wish it would. My brother got all the episodes on DVD, and they are really good. If the show would have gotten an audience, it would have kept going, and it probably would have been on for years. Make sure you watch the movie Serenity, which is about the show.
