I am currently taking the generic for Ortho Tri-cyclen. My period usually last 6-7 days so I was interested in starting the new birthcontrol that lowers your period to only 3 days or less. (Loestrin 24) My doc wrote a prescription for it however my insurance coverage wouldn't be very good (3 months for $100.00) I can get the generic Junel (?) for a much better bargain (3 months for $25.00) but wanted to see how it worked for others. Also does it cause you to gain weight and so on and so on? The Trinessa caused me to gain 25 lbs during the 4 years I have been on it and I haven't been able to lose any of it. Thanks in advance for any input!!!

i used to work in a pharmacy and this was a question that came up alot. the generics really are just as good as the brand name, usually the only difference is the fillers or maybe the color of the pill. the medicinal ingrediants are the same though. i'm not a pharmacist, but if you speak to one they will tell you something very similar to that. and insurance wise, they want you to use the generics because it is cheaper on everyone that is why you are penalized and pay more for brand names. if for some reason you find you are allergic to the generic or your dr refuses to let you use generics then in rare cases you can get it approved thru insurance to be at the lower price, but it is very hard to get that for obvious reasons.

I'm not sure Junel is a generic for the loestrin 24. Loestrin 24 was only approved by the FDA this year and so far I'm not finding anything about a generic of this. You should ask the pharmacist or your doctor if the Junel is in fact a generic of an extended cycle oral contraceptive.

There are two links below, the first is the article announcing the approval of Loestrin 24. The second is from an insurance company listing drugs and generics. You'll have to scroll down on it to get to the Loestrin 24 (or do a "search this page" in your browser) but you'll see there is no generic listed under the extended cycle pills (which Loestrin 24 is).
