Engine runs fine once it's up to speed. Doesn't like to start as the timing seems off and isn't firing correctly. I replaced the cap and rotor and now am wondering why I'm still having this problem. The cap moves a little but I was told this is normal. It is also running a little rough until the engine is hot. Spark plugs and wires are new too. Oil was just changed. Added Lucas transmission lube. Is there anything I can look at to diagnose before I take it to the shop?

Made sure the wires were on the same way they were when I took them off. Haven't tried a timing light yet. How do I fix the timing chain if it's off?

there should be a bolt that holds down the dist. losen that bolt and spin the whole dist. untill it sounds right- its seting the timing by ear- should work try also replacing the spark plugs.

sounds like when you put the distributer back in you skipped a tooth. make sure you look up the numbers on the distributer and have them facin the right way . Also you dont want the cap or the distributer to move that can throw off your timing

bad coil?!?! sorry, but i must ask if you placed the wires on the right plugs and cap locations. did you put the cap on squarely?maybe your timing IS off, due to the age of it, the timing chain may be loose..leading to timing other than spec. try advancing the timing a bit.

Did you check the timing? Changing the cap may have bumped it off the mark.
