I have a 96 Plymouth Voyager. The check engine light would stay on for days at a time and then turn off. This was because I needed to replace an o2 sensor. I replaced the sensor during a time when the check engine light was off. I was told that I would need to have a shop reset the computer, but do I need to do that if the light is off?

I have also been told that *sometimes* disconnecting the battery and reconnecting will reset the computer, but I guess my biggest concern is - how do I know if it is actually reset when the check engine light isn't on in the first place?

You need to have it reset for emissions testing purposes. The computer will store that code in it's memory, and it will appear on the emissions testing. Autozone will reset it for free. You can also disconnect the battery overnight, and it will also lose the memory (doesn't take that long, but overnight is guaranteed long enough).

My check engine light would come on and off all the time. You can take it to Advanced Auto or something like that and they can check what the error is they are getting so you can get an idea as to what the problem is, and its free. Somtimes if your gas cap isnt on tight it might do that. Check it out at Advanced Auto and see what the computer gets. If its not clear, then take it in to get it checked at a mechanic. Mine was something to do with the fuel line and my car had a recall on the hose. And now, no more Check Engine light. :)

If the "SES" light comes back on again, have it checked out. It could be a short or a faulty sensor, or it could be dirty.

Yes, it resets itself after 20 or 30 ignition starts, but not all the time. Keep an eye on it and as long as you are not experiencing any performance problems, keep driving. As soon as a new noise appears or you have any loss of power, take it to your mechanic right away...

more than likely your computer has reset itself, if it comes on again, try disconnecting your battery cable for a minute or so then reconnect it, it may take a couple to 3 days for the light to go out, when it goes out the computer has reset itself.

It's hard to tell! Did the light go out? If the light went went out then did the light bulb come on! See anything yet? If you can't figure that one out then take it to the shop and waste you money finding out!
