When we straight people think of homosexuality, we often picture 2 men or women having sex, not 2 men or women loving each other. And that's what causes some people to reject the idea. If I were gay, I'd call myself "homolover" or a "homoloving person", rather than homoSEXual, so as to emphasise that homosexuality (just as heterosexuality) is about feelings, and those feelings may INCLUDE sex. I guess fewer people are going to be homophobic, if they think it is two people loving each other.
Am I being too naive? I'm particularly interested in "homoloving" people's opinions.

Honestly? I think it's a start. it is not THE answer, but perhaps An answer. And that is part of the reason why it's often not sexual orientation, but Romantic orientation. Also...within the community, I think you'd find the word "homosexuality" isn't used very often at all; it's a matter of changing the langauge for everyone which is a much more difficult challenge.

do you remember in 1984 the formation of NewSpeak - the changing/shortening of words? it was the governments next step in utter mind control. they made acronyms etc that replaced words that gave people bad connotations while still retaining the brief meaning of the word. changing words definitely had an effect on oceania. of course we dont live in a totilitarian state. the english language is still very diverse, and i assume if you're following this paragraph, you've spoken it long enough to look at a word and think about its meaning. the word homosexual has both a prefix and a suffix. homo - same, and al - person [basically]. what you pointed out was the middle word "sex". you are referring to "making love" or whatever, but in this word it means "gender". a "same gender person" lets assume means a person who prefers people of the same gender. in slang, homosexual is termed a "homo". almost ALL of the negative connotation is placed upon the prefix. getting rid of the "sexual" to remove homophobia would not make sense because there are also heterosexuals. homophobics would still react to "homolover" as opposed to homosexual like racists would react to "african americans" instead of blacks.
if we respect homophobics even while they disrespect homosexuals, we win.

Your father does no longer sound quite homophobic, in reality somewhat ignorant, and stressful. Your mom sounds quite homophobic and ignorant. even notwithstanding, neither sound hateful. They both sound disappointed through the tips. On some factor I understand, making use of actuality mum and dad have a bent to have a resourceful and prescient of their head of techniques their infant may be. What they're doing keeps to be incorrect. i keep in mind that categorical persons of my kinfolk individuals reacted a lot an identical. Your father seems to popular that your sexuality develop into now no longer a decision you made, and that is a commence up. Your mom, on the diverse hand, seems to imagine of that you'll substitute with a guilt vacation, or some harsh words. My father is amazingly homophobic. He talks about homosexuals as although they're horribly disgusting. He said he misses the acceptable old days even as gay bashing develop into established and inspired. He inspite of the actuality that does no longer keep in mind that i'm a lesbian. extra proper of success to you. i comprehend that is so tricky even as your mum and dad aren't to any extent further supportive. Edit: @ Timothy positive, he may nicely be in quite some techniques. he's very racist to boot. He acknowledges that homosexuality isn't a decision, even yet it disgusts him a lot an identical. he's between the justifications I had a demanding time coming to words with being gay. Now, i'm chuffed, pleased with who i'm, and that i hardly communicate with him.

Well, the concept is good, the term sexual does not relate to the act of sex it relates to the actual gender. Such as heterosexual, homo-sexual, bi-sexual-it is not easy to divert terminology such as this. Good thought but I think Gays should just not identify with labels at all, no need ot say Im Gay or this Homosexual , just for ie: "Im Joe and this my man Gabe", or "Hi I'm Lynn pleased to meet you." No Labels, no identifying your sexual orientation in terms.

If you're straight, sex isn't the total way you define yourself. It could be as a mother, father, Catholic, Protestant, Jew, by profession or political party, etc.
It's the same for gays and lesbians, all of whom fall into lots of other categories other than whom they choose to love.
So why the double standard? Pure Prejudice, hate or what?

I don't think that's why people are homophobic. People are uncomfortable around gays because it's not normal as to how they were brought up.

i don't think homophobics are afraid of the term or the thought of sex between the same sex. i think they're terrified of the emotional ties between same-sex couples.

well, it could work but people will still think of gays as only sex and not love. think about it.. when ppl say they are gay, they don't say gaysexual or anything, and sadly ppl say "Freak" and all that..
