Most likely at black snake, but could be a water moccasin, or several other types of none poisonous snakes. Be aware that all snakes bite when threaten however. Some types of water moccasins are poisonous some are not depends on where you are in the country. Best thing if you really curious is to take a picture and look it up. Also, please don't kill it, they eat mice and rats, and other nasty things we don't want or need. It could even be a King Snake which eats rattle snakes.

Black and 8 feet long...?

First, you did not say where you are located.
Second, why are you close enough to a snake, that you can't identify, to get its length?

An 8 foot black snake is unlikely. they don't get that long. Possibly a Blue racer, but that length would be rare.

Again, your location would give a better idea as to species...
