Before the Big Bang, the Universe and everything within it was condensed into a single point. There was/is nothing outside the Universe by definition. Space is part of the Universe. The cause of the Big Bang is unknown.

This is a very difficult question to answer but I will see if I can shed some light.
Before the Big Bang happened there was mass. This mass is unexplained however. How did it come into existence, well that is where the spiritual nature of our logic comes in. This grand life force is what created the mass. Now, what created the grand spirit itself, through its own mind. a mind always is and will be and does not require a brain {whether science does or not is a different thing entirely.} This would mean the grand spirit would be before the big bang. Science and spirit can be the same.
If you aren't of a religion then I am not sure what to say. If your not a Christian then I will tell you neither am I........

There was an old Outer Limits episode called "Do not open until doomsday" that might help you understand. An alien from another universe got stuck in a sort of limbo on the way here because it was unfamiliar with the nature of space and time in our universe. It kidnapped humans to teach it about such things. The first thing one human asked when captured was, naturally, "where am I?". In an otherworldly voice, the alien replied, "You are nowhere". Get it? "Before" the Big Bang, to the extent such a word can be applied, is not inside our space-time universe, and not-inside there may be not only no thing, but now where, and since space and time are interchangable depending on one's reference frame, no when. After the Big Bang, our space-time formed a complete unbounded continuum, so there may or may not be an "outside". If there is, that would be other universes.

Before the Big Bang, normally they say that the universe was a size of a pea. The big bang was actually an explosion of a premivel atom which was so massive, that the heat caused by the explosion made the universe to expand. A small atom of the 'pea' exploded as the big bang...

Interesting question. I always ask Christians what did God do before "the beginning" ? Was he just floating out in empty space for zillions of years ? And without the earth, there can't even be a "year" as we know it. Somethings we may never know..

A whole lot of stuff we know nothing about yet. God caused the big bang - why not him!
I guess God can do what he wants.

Time is a dimension of the universe. Since time originated with the universe, temporal concepts such as "before" are inapplicable to the first instant of time that existed. There was no time, thus no way to apply temporal measurements, or temporal ways of thinking.
Although we perceive time as linear, it isn't necessarily - time's arrow is only in our senses. Temporal laws work equally well in both directions. You can think of the zero moment as simply one of the walls of time... time's ending in the direction of the big bang.
"Before" just doesn't apply, since there was no time in which a "before" could exist.

@Bugaisha, maybe God had an infinite number of things that he was pre-occupied with before creating the Universe. Afterall, who says that Universes are all that GOD does. :)
