The U.S. and the U.K. have different standards, why? what is the rest of the world like? Do other countries or regions have the same or different?

Standards evolved independently as many cultural elements do, such as religion. Now that we are a global society, it is very inconvenient.

France and the rest of the European continent is different than the UK. Parts of Asia are also different. Many areas outside the US have 240V available at a typical outlet as well.

There are electrical outlet adapter packs for sale that show the standard in a given country and the adapter to use.

Because thye adpted diffrent ones when this all started.
I understand the system the UK has is less danergous to humans.
I have only traveled to Mexico & I didn't need an adaptor there.

there are several different elec. outlets and plug-ins around the world as far as I know. if would be nice if it would get standardized! when I moved to the US I had to give away all my elec. appliances (from blender to hair blower) and buy new ones...

and while we're at it - please introduce the metric system every where...so much easier =)

well uk and us have different voltage 120 us and 220 uk. But as for countries with the same voltage i think they do it to sell more products.
