This is an excellant question, I'm gonna keep this one on my watch list, just to read the responses you get. Hat's off to you for this one, I too feel the same way you feel. Good Job, from one "woman of color" to another.

On a different note, I think the phrase "people of color" sucks. Everyone's a person of color! Also, I'm not crazy about "black" and "white" either, because they are totally artificial categories. I think we should all just refer to each other by our given names.

In America, of course, people assume this becuase of civil war and all the other mess and it is sopose to mean everything besides fair color skin. you kno the signs they had way back then colors only. hmm African American is more appropriat tho. We are all people of color and race.... you ancestors go so far back and we are a rainbow of generations if understand. most other racist dont refer to themselves as ppl of color but asian or indian ect ect. its just a slang term and they should say the political names instead... beucase it obviously offends people!

For the same reason why when the subject of slavery people look at the African-American in class; instead of knowing the truth that all races at one time have been under slavery.

Because of the civil rights movement. Everyone is taught about MLK and what happened in the 1960's so people automatically think about black people.
P.S. MLK was a great man!

It is not always assumed that people of color mean blacks. When I think of people of color, I think of people that are not caucasian, but have some color to them (hence people of color). Other people are probably just ingnorant.

I would like to suggest that we drop all labels....but will that work knowing mans penchant for descriptivism...
I am a mixture of many cultures and/or breeds of man....My skin has at times a reddish hue and at other times seems more brown.. should I be referred to as a man of color...>?
The problem with labels is some are to simple to truly describe the beauty of the mix....ANCESTRY is the key word...We should learn to use it...

It's because black people are so popular!! I love them. Maybe it's because that's what people are most used to when they think of people of color. Sorry, if I have offended you. I hope not.

because some people just suck... racism sucks....i am white and totally against racism , and most people discriminate me for being goth/punk, whatever...labels are stupid too...and another reason is that uneducated people like to use common euphamisms, so please all of you reading this, join in the fight to eliminate these indecent, slanderous terms brought about by a LIMITED VOCABULARY...
