Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a fluoropolymer discovered by Roy J. Plunkett of DuPont. It is generally known to the public by DuPont's brand name Teflon.

PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. It is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. Other polymers with similar composition are known with the Teflon name: fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) and perfluoroalkoxy polymer resin (PFA). They retain the useful properties of PTFE of low friction and non-reactivity, but are more easily formable. DuPont patented it in 1941, and registered the Teflon trademark in 1944.

I read somewhere than the Teflon coating is applied in a multi-step process. Each step uses a greater consentration of Teflon. Apparently there is one thing than sticks to Teflon: Teflon. I have no clue if that's ture.

Nonstick pans are also known as teflon. Most stores that carry cookware will carry teflon pans.

As a side note, teflon is a dangerous chemical and you should make sure to use it properly or you can poison yourself.
