If it's an old refrigerator, it probably won't last very long and will just clutter up your basement unnecessarily. Also, think of your poor husband's back! He is going to need to lug that down the stairs!

You can lay a fridge down, but make sure you stand it upright for the same amount of time it was lying down before you plug it in.
Freon leaks back up the tubes when it is on it's side. Letting it stand will allow it to settle back down.
No problem at all.

Keep it upright if at all possible.
If you do have to transport it laying down, let it sit in the upright position for at least 24-48 hours before plugging it back in.

If you do move it and lay it on its side, let it sit unplug for a minimum of 48 hours to let all of the fluids in the line settle back to where they should be. This is called equalizing the lines. When you plug it in, if it doesn't start up right away, unplug it for another day, then try it again. It should work and shouldn't sustain any damage.
Good luck and good question.

Yes but you need to stand it up right for 24 to 48 hours before plugging in and turning it on.

yes, but let it sit upright for 24 hrs before plugging it in (so the oil for the compressor goes back to the sump at the bottom.).
