Spamming is unwanted commercial promotion. Such as email that promises to "Add 3 inches to your (fill in body part here)". But it is also posting commercial or blatantly self-promoting items. Like links to your business's website, or waxing overly enthusiatic about some product, etc.

Lurking is reading posts without participating. Lots of people do that as they get their bearings (wish more did). Some people like to read more than they want to write. And some people need info about a subject (crafts, plumbing, whatever) but don't have a lot to contribute.

Lurking is percieved differently by different people. Some don't like the idea of a cyber universe of people silently viewing the posters' thoughts and typos. Others (like me) see it as par for the course and a natural consequence of on-line forum.

spamming is sending unwanted mail like jokes, stories etc... to the group that aren't related to it (they want all craft related things).

Lurking is where you join the group but never take part in it by answering e-mails your able to answer, ask questions etc... some people join a group but never read the mail or take part in it so its pointless in them being there. Some groups don't mind lurkers but others do so you may find your no longer a member.
