I would highly recommend looking into a Chevy Cobalt. I live in Alaska and drive a Toyota T-100 which is fantastic for what I need but dang what a gas guzzler! This summer my fiance and I flew to Seattle and rented a car to drive to Boise, Budget gave us a Chevy Cobalt. We fell in love.
The lines of the car and the fact that it comes with a spoiler make it look sleek and sporty. The interior was roomy enough for the two of us to curl up at the drive in movie, I'm 215 lbs he's 6'1" and we were both very comfortable even with all our luggage in the backseat.
The fact that it gets 28-34 mi per gallon had us sold! The instrument panel boats a mile per gallon per mile gage, the car will tell you what kind of gas millage you're getting at current speed you're going and rpm's you're using! Coming out of the mountains we were getting 44 miles per gallon, we topped at 82 miles per gallon but that was cruising out of Mt.Rainer national park for 7 miles or so. That is going to be my next car, I would buy one to drive here in Alaska during the summer and save my 4x4 for winter purposes.

Get a toyota corolla, or camry
cheap and very economical
Corolla/Camry
13000/18500 $
28/40 MPG
**hybrids will cost you >25 or 28k and with the amount of gas that you save, will take you about 6-8 years to gain back what you paid up front for the hybrid technology, so not worth it, yet....

I think that it depends what your idea of "cute" is. Honestly, I like the look of a Mazda 3 hatchback, but if you want a coupe, I like MINI Coopers.
