I have skydived and read all the posts for this question so far and Christine C. is right. The fear of heights is not so much an issue when your jumping out of a plane as it is when your jumping of a bridge (bungee). From your elevation, the land looks more like a topographical map, with beige squares for corn fields and silver retangles for shopping malls. Sky diving also doesn't give you the feeling of 'ground rush', the uncomfortable effect of slamming into the side of the planet (bungee).
You will have two chutes; one packed by the company you've chosen and one packed, federally regulated, and changed each month as your safety chute. Your primary will almost never fail, your secondary will not fail.
You have the right to inquire about the company's safety record, and this is strongly suggested. They are obliged to offer you full disclosure. My company had only one fatality in 10 years, and that was a suicide by an instructor.
I was afraid of heights: that was my motivation. Since the jump, I am far more calm in all aspects of my life. Sky diving gave me confidence in myself and my abilities to overcome any obsticle. Not only do I fully endorse your decision, I wish I could be there with you!

I have been sky diving - simply to try a new thing. There is
nothing saying that after you have done it, you have to do it
again. You may find it a thrill beyond belief or you may find
it pointless terror.
However, fear of heights tends actually not to be the issue.
You jump from higher than your eye can truly perceive
altitude so the phobia doesn't cut in the same way.
I know of pilots who are scared of heights. This is not
something they advertise when you get on board, however.
This is not something you should do, however, because some
guy wants you to. If you are really scared, you may freeze
up when you land and hurt yourself - note I said "hurt", not
"kill". When you land, you are supposed to roll - and if you
don't you can break bones.
I am not going to claim that it is safe as, say, driving. It
isn't. Hundreds of people die every year from this sport.
However, once you have done it, it gives you serious
bragging rights - and thousands of people have done it
during multiple wars with only few injuries and deaths
(not due to gunfire, that is).
What do you hope to gain?

You won't die - skydiving is safe to do. I would say put off the skydiving for a little bit, though. Work your way up to it - first get comfortable in high buildings, then on roller coasters, and THEN go skydiving! That's just what I would do, however. :)

go when you feel ready. get your fear of heights under control. start small and work your way up. obviously you will not be able to work super high up but do the best you can. if he likes you back he will not pressure you into doing it. the chances of you dieing are slim. the gear has gotten very good over the years. when you go, look straight out and then jump.

You should avoid it with the problems you cited! If you do go ahead with it, you could experience faling out of you bed when you are asleep and that would scare you knowing deep down you are asleep with no parachute to break your fall. This could happen more often. A scary feeling! You might even scream in one of these instances.

Go for it! Just check the parachute, then check it again and then check the back up chute then check the main chute. Ready to go. Oh, you might want to check the plane for safety violations. Then you are all set! On second thought DON"T DO IT!!!!!!
