to put the background on the page all you need to do is include the following lines in your style sheet:
body {
background-image: url('myimage.jpg');
background-repeate: no repeat;
}

Find a website that offers free layouts and then copy and paste the html code into the about me, books, heroes etc section of your profile. Try hotfreelayouts.com

What I use is I found this site http://www.mygen.co.uk/ and then went to create a layout at the very top of the page and it lets you create almost anything you want for your site, and its really nice and easy to use. You should try it... good luck!
