I'm EMO, so I MUST cut my wrists.

I'm BLACK, so I MUST carry a gun.

I'm HISPANIC, so I MUST be ghetto.

I'm ASIAN, so I MUST be smart.

I'm NOT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, so I MUST be a leada.

I'm JEWISH, so I MUST be greedy.

I'm GAY, so I MUST have AIDS.

I'm a LESBIAN, so I MUST have a sex-tape.

I'm ARAB, so I MUST be a terrorist.

I SPEAK MY MIND, so I MUST be a *****.

I'm OVERWEIGHT, so I MUST have a problem with self control.

I'm RELIGIOUS, so I MUST shove my beliefs down your throat.

I'm an ATHEIST, so I MUST hate the world.

I DON'T HAVE A RELIGION, so I MUST not have morals.

This was an interresting post I found...just want to know what your thoughts are about stereotypes...and do you agree with them?

Again, i didn't write this, i found this post on myspace, and it got me to thinking...ok

For everyone who didn't agree with this statement. IT WAS NOT ME WHO WROTE THIS......for the THIRD time. some people just don't like to read the whole post before they post a response. 'humanities stupidity' thing....it went along with the post. I got it from myspace and wanted to know how you guys feel about stereotypes.

The reason stereotypes exist is because they are so often right. Our brains are very good at pattern matching. Through our experiences in life, we detect patterns such as a red stove-top is hot or ice is slippery. Our brain then uses these patterns as a short cut so we don't have to stop and think about everything in our environment. This works for social experience too. If every red headed person with a blue hat you meet acts stupid, then your brain expects any red headed person with a blue hat to act stupid.

Unfortunately, it works for false information as well as personal experience. If we are told over and over in movies or TV news that Arabs are terrorists, for example, then we believe it without thinking. As intelligent beings, we need to be aware of the stereotypes that color our thinking and be ready to make exceptions for each person with whom we interact.

It might be easier to answer if you didn't have the wrong stereotypes for so many different people. Hispanic=Ghetto?? Lesbian=Sex Tapes?? Atheist=Hate the World???

I hate stereotypes - you can't group people like that. Sometimes, the majority of people do fit into a stereotype group, but there's always at least one person who does not.

I don't feel stereotypes are completely random. They have some truth behind it, but to categorize all people who are a certain race to be a certain way or what not is completely ignorant of that person.

HEY!!! i dont agree wit some of the stereotypes. i hear a lot of them, but i dont believe them. i'm blk AND Jamaican AND hispanic. only SOME blk ppl carry guns 2 protect themselves and who told u that Jamaicans smoke a lot of weed??? i'm not THAT type of hispanic either. i dont try 2 act ghetto. get ur facts straight gurl.

Stereotypes are categories in which people put other people when they have nothing better to do with their time then judge others. They are racist, degrading, hurtful, untruthful, etc. I don't find stereotypes to be of any use to anyone.
