Digits. This was a question posed on here already. One, as in 1 is a single digit and is 12 cents, Forty-four, as in 44, is two digits and is this 24 cents. 144 is three digits and at 12 cents a pop, ta-dah, 36 cents.

Maybe numbers for a house? Like, the metal digits that you'd nail to a post or above the garage or whatever. Each digit is $0.12, so if the house number is 1, it would be $0.12, and if it's 44, it would be $0.24, and if it's 144, it would be $0.36.
