no need to quarantine the fish at all , but if its in a pond would be better to put it in a tank to treat, look out for methadine blue solution that should do the trick, best of luck

Eew...popeye...nasty bacteria behind the eyeball that can make it pop out. 5 gallons is too small for a goldfish. It will work for a quarentine tank, though! I would recommend taking all the other fish out and putting them in a bigger one, or taking them back to the pet store. Shame on them for not telling you a single goldfish will outgrow a 5 gallon tank. That's probably why it got an infection... too much ammonia and/or nitrate from crowding. Anyway, the cheepest antibiotic is aquarium salt, but it still works best when used with an antibiotic listed for use on popeye. It will also kill good bacteria in your tank, so you should check ammonia levels daily with a test kit. Keep the water as clean as possible and hopefully it'll get better!

after you get the medicine for pop eye seperate it because a) it is cheaper than treating the entire tank and b) you are not subjecting the other fish to un-necessarry meds. once the fish is better i suggest either getting a filter, getting a better filter and buying ph and ammonia testers. the reason your fishy is sick is because of poor water quality (if purchaced recentley it could be from pet shop). for the safety of the other fish the water should be tested for ammonia levels and ph at least every other day until the tank is healthier.
also invest in some aquarium salt. if applied at the right ammount it prevents most illness in fish.

i would leave your fish in the tank and dont change all the water or you ll take the good bacteria away and probably kill all the fish,go 2 your local pet shop shop theres a treatment you can buy for that but i cant remeber wich one look on the back of the boxes they have pictures on its around 4 quid for a bottle
