If you are talking about the ones where u go to a shop to have them done-- they do ruin your underneath nail because they have to file them down so that the false ones will fit. I had mine done for my wedding and by the time id been on honey moon, my natural nail underneath started to grow and in the end i just peeled them off but i tell you now my nail bed has never been the same since.

Acrylic nails do not ruin your nails if you have them done properly. Of course this usually means paying more than £20! If you get them done somewhere cheap - there are a lot of "nail salons" run by koreans or people from china who aren't properly trained - they're most likely to use a electric file which is really something that whirls like a drill and has a circular file attatchment on the end.
In order for the acrylic to stick to your nails the technician needs to remove 2 or 3 layers from each nail, which is hardly noticeable if done correctly. This is because the top layer of your nail is covered by oil from your skin and various other substances. A good techinician will usually replenish the lost moisture with a series of "lotions and potions" before they get to the acrylic stage. A rubbish one will use one of those drill attachments and probably take of 10-15 layers (or more) because they really don't have control over something moving so fast. This leads to that groove/step you see in peoples nails once they have the acrylics taken off and they find that their nails are very bendy which is an indicator that they didn't go to a good technician. Your technician should use a medium-coarse file and should use a new one for each customer and push back, clip and oil your cuticles too.
Acrylics need to ideally be soaked off and carefully filed down. This can take a while but if your techinican was well trained they wouldn't be put on so thick that it should take forever. Also heating the acetone helps. If you have them removed at a salon they should give you a mini manicure to replensih the oils again. Like I said if you go to a good technician they wont put them on too thick (~1mm) so you can soak them off yourself will pure acetone from a pharmacy.

They ruin your nails and are difficult to remove yourself. If you must have fake nails, try silk wraps, they cost alot more, but are non-damaging and healthy, as they let your real nails get air and grow.

NOOOOOOOOO they do not come off easy. They make your nails like paper because the nails cannot breath underneath. Shame tho as they look lovely :)
