I think it would depend on when it happened.

If, tomorrow, the US was to be annexed by Canada, they would feel that there had been a hostile takeover and they would constantly have "insurgencies" to bomb us.

However, if it had always been like this, maybe the larger population base down south would have sort of overwhelmed our culture up here .... or maybe there wouldn't be so many communities north of the 49th .... after all, most of our population is within, what, two hours of the border?

So my biggest guess is that if this had always been all Canada, it would be sort of a cultural mix between Canadian and American culture, but the population would be more centralized in places like NY state and Washington state, and less in places like Winnipeg, Edmonton, etc. They would be looked at as places you went to get resources. (Sort of how Fort McMurray and Yellowknife are considered).

Just a guess....

btw -- also interesting to think about whether we would still be part of the Commonwealth, still loyal, etc.

First canadian health care is not "free" you all pay higher taxes. Second i have lived in a country where there was "free" health care and to be honest it was horrible.
I would wait 3 hours to see the doctor.. When i finally saw the doctor it would last 2 minutes and i would be shuffled out to make room for the next patient.
Soooo if i have a choice of paying a little more and getting better service or paying higher taxes and getting "free" health care form sub-par doctors. I would pay a little more everytime hands down. the "free" health care just doesnt compete...not even close....... and besides i pay $108 per month for healthcare. is that to expensive. i dont think this so.. but then then again i work a lot harder than most of our neighbors.

It would suck. Nothing against Canada, but it's not my country. If I wanted Canadian style, I'd move there. There are a few nice things about Canada, but the beer...eh? I'm not to keen on the whole French province with an attitude. I rather learn Spanish.

I wonder if the British would have given the members of the Commonwealth autonomy if that were the case. The gun and violence issues would be lessened. One of the sources of this in the U.S. is racial issues, if we hadn't had slavery there would be less strife around race. With our vast natural resources, I would guess Canada would be a superpower, no telling how that would affect global politics (e.g. would we be more closely aligned with the French?). Hockey might be the national game, though as chilly as it is in some parts of Canada it might be that our warm-weather sports would be the rage.

For one thing we would have a national health care program, and a real retirement system! I love Canada, and I love the U.S.A.! We would be more civilized, and be able to kick Bush out of office much easier! We would have a thousand years of history, instead of about 230 years!
In reality Canada is so much less populated than the USA, and it has this identity crisis between French and English. It is not nervona, not even close!

Be careful asking questions like that. The USA might go in and take over in a "pre emptive action" on Canada.

They would no longer be citizens, but subjects of Her Majesty the Queen, but they would probably then repeat history and borrow huge amounts of money from Cubans to buy a mercenary army to overthrow the Crown.

Funny, we usually ask the question the other way around. But, I guess we'd lose our health care.

The song "America the Beautiful" would go back to its original lyrics: "God Save the King"
