As a nurse and coordinator or a overweight program for children, I would advise your friend to exercise and chose healthy foods. Knock out FAST FOOD and bring lunch to school. Each fruits, veggies, lean meats, ground turkey and whole grains. Children should not be on diets, however just like adults children need to eat junk in moderation and exercise at least 45 min a day- gym class does not count. Do not deprive yourself of foods that you enjoy... Eat them OCCASIONALLY and or work in exercise instead of watching tv.
More and more children are overweight which can cause Type 2 diabetes in children. Older adults are no longer the only people getting this lifelong chronic disease....
Self esteem also plays a factor in being overweight.
I strongly encourage your friend to speak to her parents and physician.

It's definitely NOT healthy at 14 years old to weight 215 no matter how tall she is.

It's not about what that scale says, it's about a person's level of health and activity. Muscle weighs more than fat, and we are all built in unique ways. As long as a person is getting excersize and doesn't have an eating disorder, they are fine. NO matter what we weigh, we shouldn't sit around all day and eat potato chips and cookies and things like that. So go for a nice walk with this person every day and stop worrying about how much either of you weigh.

I'm sorry to disagree with the previous answer, but even at 5'8" your friend needs to lose more than 30 pounds. I'd say 150 would be right for her. There's no need to try to get down any lower than that. Her weight will look great. As young as she is, she definitely does NOT need to weigh more than 150.
