Keith Moon, drummer for The Who, after hearing about the band said that it would go over like a lead balloon.

The band was originally formed in 1968 by guitarist Jimmy Page under the name The New Yardbirds in order to fulfill some performance commitments booked before the break up of the original Yardbirds. Robert Plant was the singer. After some concerts, the band's name was changed to Led Zeppelin, after Keith Moon, drummer with The Who, suggested "you'll go over like a lead Zeppelin". The word "lead" is misspelled deliberately to avoid confusion, fearing it might be conceived of as the "lead Zeppelin" (as in "lead singer"), as opposed to a Zeppelin constructed of the metal lead

When Jimmy Page was assembling the group, Keith Moon (drummer from The Who) got word of his plans and predicted the group would go down "like a lead balloon" (this is a common English expression). Bassist and keyboardist John Entwistle thought it would be "more like a lead zeppelin." Page took the phrase and manager Peter Grant changed the spelling to "led" in order to avoid mispronunciation.

Keith Moon himself got the phrase from John Entwistle's term for a bad gig, describing it as "going over" (some sources say "going down") "like a lead zeppelin".[7] The group adopted the name, deliberately dropping the 'a' in Lead to prevent people from pronouncing it as "leed". [1]

they were discussing their band, and one (I honestly don't know who) said that they were going to 'sink like a lead zeppelin' and not be successful... hence the name.
