It's one of the greatest movies ever made! Taxi Driver is something that is not really explainable. You have to see it to believe it. I'm sure some will put up a bunch of blather about social alienation and unrequited love. Ignore all that. De Niro puts in a performance for the ages. Never has a movie hit me so hard. It is about real life for someone who doesn't compromise. It is simply stunning.

What makes Taxi Driver great is just the raw depiction of life in mid 70s NY which was pretty hellacious and a unsettling depiction of a loner Vietnam Vet who De Niro portrayed so amazingly well compounded with Jodie Foster playing a 12 year old prostitute and beliving that this girl had been on the streets for a while.
There's no message to the movie, I don't think movies have messages so much as it's the telling of a story of one lonely guy who wanted to be something.
