Yes, the press about it does help people. It makes them change their lifestyle and behave in ways that ensure their safety. Yes, Atlanta really CAN BE that dangerous. It all depends on YOU. I spend a lot of time in ATL and there are certain things you just do NOT need to be doing. Riding Marta after 8pm is not a good idea. Walking alone in many areas, even in broad daylight, is not a good idea. It's really all about your behavior. If you behave in a safe way, then it is a perfectly safe place to live.

I am a GA Peach living in the Atlanta area for the last 11 years. I have not had anything happen to me at all...Thank God. I have not had anything stolen, or been the victim of a crime. I think the media just goes crazy with every little thing just to have the "Late Breaking News". There is crime everywhere! I did notice that the crime has increased since the Katrina victims have relocated here. I like GA. I like Atlanta. I think you should stay.

I am in Atlanta quite often and have seen my fair share of the murders and what not on the news there. it is quite nice in the north part of the city around Dunwoody and outside the perimeter. the farther south you go its worse it gets. there are many murders and rapes in all the counties surrounding Atlanta but as long as you stay out of the bad areas of town (you know which ones they are) you should be fine. don't move away that only lets the city get worse. Atlanta is one of the fastest growing cities in America and all big cities have their downsides that's never gonna change. the recent press has been movies and they are just trying to make a buck. don't move because of that you are fine. hope this helps you out

Hey there, I just moved here to Atlanta, and i've found it more dangerous than Dallas (my former hometown). I think it really depends on the neighborhood though. Where I live, near Marietta, it seems pretty safe, but the closer to downtown I get, i'd be more careful, and I never go out by myself at night. I would stay in Atlanta, but move to a safer city like Marietta, Roswell, Smyrna, etc. Good luck!

Well, I live in Atlanta, too. The truth is that crime is bad here- but it's not the worst place in the world when it comes to crime. New Orleans is much much worse.
You can move, if you want- but just remember that crime is everywhere. I am not trying to scare you- just saying that criminals do their evil deeds everywhere on earth.
If I were you, I would trust in God. He will always protect you, if you allow him to be first in your life. Just pray to God that you and your kids will remain safe. Of course, there just aren't any guarantees in life, and we should always be on alert and careful.
The News is all negative. Don't dwell upon it. It's sad that it's human nature to focus on the negative aspects of things- but I believe that we can rise above it.

if it's for your children, then research the nearby suburbs. most of the safer schools are not in the city limits but are not necessarily too far. i guess it also depends on your job. if you have to commute in and out of the city, it can be quite a hassle, depending on your work hours.
look into marietta, smyrna, vinings, sandy springs, and norcross (all "metro Atlanta") or buckhead and virginia-highlands (affluent areas within the city)

No Atlanta isn't THAT dangerous. don't worry your kids will be fine. Just make sure they don't wander around bye them selves until they're 17 then thats when they start building their lives.
