Write a polite letter explaining the whole story.

Make three things clear,

What you asked them to do

What they did

Why you feel they should offer compensation including cost of the dress and how much you paid for their services, if this doesn't work try trading standards. They shouldn't have touched your dress if they were unable to clean it properly without damage.

Don't even think about court, you'd be laughed out of the room for trying to bring legal action against a dry cleaner regardless of the cost of the dress or the inconvenience.

Bring it in. Demand a refund! If it doesn't work think about the dress. Did you sign a waver stating you understand the risks of taking your dress to the dry cleaner? If so, sorry! You can't do anything about it. If you didn't, however, consider the dress. The dry cleaners can see tiny moth holes the human eye can't see, which could cause large holes to appear. If the dress is expensive or means a lot to you, I'd try fighting it. But, if not, what a great excuse to buy a new dress!

If the clothing was worth less than £1000 then you can threaten the dry cleaner with an action in the small claims court.

Talk to your local Citizens Advice Bureau for further information
