It looks like Pete Rose is correct...

Here's a link to the NL batting champions going back to 1876...

If you click on the players' names, it will take you to their individual pages, with their career stats...but the biographical info will include their batting style (i.e. left, right or 'both')

I couldn't find a switch hitter until Pete Rose's name was listed... I know the styles of most of the NL Batting Champs, but there were a few I wasn't sure of... i checked, and none of them were switch hitters... but you can check them all yourself to make sure...

You might check out Pete Rose's wikipedia article to see if it mentions him being the first switch hitter to win the title in the NL.
