Goto Control Panel then to Security Center
There you would find an option for Automatic Updates.
Click on the Arrow Marks and Disable it.Simple.

Which update? Only two would have done such a thing. SP 2, may cause problems if your computer is infected with any virus's or spy-ware. That's the only way SP 2 would cause problems, all other bugs are taken care of.
Then there's the update that checks to make sure that your copy of windows is legal.
Otherwise, if it is a different update, you can tell that update not to be installed and install the others. Go to the windows update site and select custom, and then uncheck the update that is giving you problems.

Go to Control Panel -> Security Center and look at the bottom for automatic updates and change them to your needs

Right click My Computer. Go to the automatic Updates tab. Turn it off.

to turn ur Windows Automatic Updates.......u simply go to Control Panel n select Security Center.............by clickin Security Center, u'll find 4 option on ur screen i.e. 1. Firewall 2. Aotomatic Updates
3. Virus Protection n 4. Manage security settings for.......internet options..........auto. updates........n for windows firewall.
U just hv to select "Manage Sec. sett. for Auto. Updates".
after u'll b havin a new window dere u will find four option about ur updates...............dere u choose "Turn Off Automatic Updates"......n ur problem will get solved....................cuterelations

there is no need to replace the hard drive. do you have service pack2 of xp? if yes go to securty center and turn of automatic update.
else right click my computer>>>properties>>>automatic update>>>>click on stop automatic update

go to google and say windows updates. it will lead you to the updates website of microsoft. check out the updates schedules and try to cancel any further ones.
