I just sat in the longest traffic jam.... when i got to the cause of the jam it was roadworks..... I was just wondering do roadmen ever do any work? The ones i always see, are doing a lot of chin wagging and not a lot of work!

At least one out of six of them do. It would be the one with the shovel while the other five are there for observational and mutual consultation purposes. Not to mention, it's nearly always the "NEW" guy that has the shovel. I guess that person hadn't been there long enough to be in the consultation ring.

Oh, ye of little faith! Could you not see that those roadmen were thinking hard over that cuppa, and pointing at things in such a way that meant very portentous things. They have to keep their lore away from the rest of us, because of gods, and government, and paychecques. I have been privileged to see a workman study a hole in the pavement, with such intensity that he must have been moving things with his mind. And I have been privileged to hear from their supervisor, when I phoned to complain, that I knew nothing about roadworks, holes in the road, or the tar scattererd nicely across my carpet.

These things are beyond us regular folk, so be sure to touch your cap next time you go by.

That is the way they work with a lot of hand and chin signals. The motors on their construction trucks are too loud to here one another.

You only ever see one of the six workmen working - one to dig he hole and the others to reminise about what the road looked like before the hole was dug.

Seriously, how can the workmen do their work when they have all that traffic going by distracting them?

Usually 6 men standing around, leaning on shovels, watching one poor guy do all the work.
