Love your avatar and your questions. Yes it bothers me. I live in Florida and it's always a mess down here(2000) but in the city where I vote we do have paper back ups. You must fill out your ballot and then it goes into a scanner that records your vote. However that seems to be the rarity and not the rule. We need to be able to recount if necessary or we should pass a law that if in question we would re-vote. This is a frightening situation because it too ease to play with. Maybe we should use a fingerprint scan before we vote so it would only take one per voter and you couldn't cheat.

Tommy G,
The question was asked regarding the USA as a whole.
It should bother each and every person in this country that there is no accountable for your votes. There is only one reason why you wouldn't want a paper trail on ballots and that is so you can CHEAT!!!!! There is no other reason. If you can think of another reason why you would want to be able to re count the votes from the machine please tell me so I can stop writing this propaganda. I hope I am wrong.

Allow me to point out what will happen when electronic machines produce a so-called 'paper trail' printout..
1) A Democrat will go into the voting booth, and deliberately cast a vote for the Republican Presidential Candidate...
2) The machine will spit out a paper, showing this person voted for the Republican candidate (which they did).
3) The person will scream that the machine is rigged, claim they "voted for the Democrat candidate, but the machine says they voted for a Republican."
4) Democrats nation-wide will whine that the only reason they keep losing election after election after election is because the voting machines are rigged against them by Karl Rove.
5) Therefore, the Dems will claim, all Republican victories are illegitimate.
6) The mainstream press will tote the Democrats' line for them.
7) Republicans will win, anyway.
(source: a high ranking Democrat I know in state politics has already told me that this will be one of the Dems strategies when they lose (inside high ranking Democratic circles, they believe they will lose in 2006 and in 2008).
EDIT: Good timing for this question:
Can anyone explain to me why Democrats believe that voters should not be required to identify themselves when they go to vote:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060717/ap_on_el_ge/voter_id;_ylt=AqLHe3DaCWxoKYdHvMkbt4Jp24cA;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--
The headline is:
"Democrats challenge new Mo. voter ID law"
"(Democrat) Officials in Missouri's two largest cities filed a lawsuit Monday to block a new state law requiring voters to show photo identification.
Under the law, voters starting this November will need a photo ID issued by either the state of federal government, such as a driver's license, to cast a regular ballot."
My, my,my... wonder why Democrats are so opposed to requiring people to actually produce identification when they go to vote?

It bothers me quite a bit and gives me the feeling that the winners of the elections are those who control the voting machines.
Electronic voting machines should produce a receipt. You should then be able to take that receipt and review it to make sure it shows the correct people you voted for.
Then you take that receipt and put it in a ballot box that others could check just in case the vote is in dispute.

the hot Rolling Stone article, Will the subsequent Election Be Hacked? with the aid of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in cludes an on the checklist declare with the aid of a former Diebold worker that they replaced the utility interior the machines the night before Georgia's 2002 regularly occurring election. This, or different altered utility could desire to nonetheless be there for the November election. of direction, the component is, with those machines there is no thank you to instruct that the pronounced vote counts mirror how the voters voted.

The only reason that we have this issue is because Al Gore could not believe that he lost the election.
