My three yr old POA mare foaled what I consider to be a very small foal. I did not know the mare was bred when I bought her.

I forgot to mention her weight. She weighed 38 pounds at birth. My photo is her now. She is 6 weeks old.

if she's 6 weeks old eating isn't an issue. Size depends on what size the parents are. Pony foals *are* smaller than horse foals....they'll look tiny in comparison. If she's healthy, eating, in good condition I wouldn't worry about her size. From a first time mama and a young one at that she might be a little small. As long as she's healthy she'll be fine. POAs can be short and still are a POA. Nice looking foal by the way...lots of color!

A 3 yr old isn't done growing yet, so might have a smaller foal than she would other wise. Its unfortunate that your poor mare was bred so young, she will probably now be small than if she had weighted until she was fullgrown. Assuming your vet isn't worried, you don't nned to be, so long as the foal is eating healthy. Make sure you feed mom a good diet though!

Get the mother and the foal checked up on by the vet sometime soon, but if the foal is standing and nursing fine then I don't think there is much of a problem. If it shows any signs of not being completely healthy then have the vet come right away.
Best of luck with the new foal!

First foals are always smaller then succeeding foals. At birth, the foal's withers are usually level with the mare's stifle.
