When I did this last Saturday I had to stand for 4 hours with a huge sign on a long wooden pole. I was very bored because hardly anyone came up to me for more information. I needed the money or I wouldn't have done it. There is another event to promote in a month so how do I keep from getting bored whilst standing there. I need both hands on the pole if it is windy but if not one hand can hold it. Music is not a good idea when people want to talk to me about the event. What to do?

I am not going to drink, masturbate or act like a loony just cause I'm bored.

Use the time to learn a language, there are plenty of audio only courses available. Seeing as you are a bit strapped this might not be an option.

learn a poem, bet with yourself what colour the next car will be.

bring a friend and chat to them.

chat to people walking past, try not to scare anyone.

Identify the furthest object from your position.

Consider how you will spend all the cash

If there is a god who made him?

Can I prove that I exist beyond all doubt?

Practice your cartwheels. Learn a new dance. Invite a buddy to advertise with you , get them in on it and you both can be silly together. Dance with your sign with the sign facing out of course. Youll get more attention if you are acting silly and having fun.

Tape a book or magazine to the back of your sign . Dont forget a binder or paper clip to hold your page if its windy.

I use my ipod with only 1 earphone so that when people talk to me I can still hear them. Like when im shopping at the checkout register. You could try that you just cant really crank it.

It looks to me that you are promoting someone elses product or service. I would advice you to use your idle time to think, strategise on how you will succeed and have others carry big sign to promote you idea - though I should tell you this is not an easy think to do. It will mean you are doing two jobs at the same time; but if you can do it, I promise you in no time you wil be sitting in an office signing cheques. Good Luck.

I've seen people doing similiar jobs to yours, reading - book in one hand, and the other holding the pole. When it's been windy they have hugged the pole to them, so they can hang onto their book.

Spot/memorize license plates. Have an earphone in just one ear, walk up to people (those who give you direct eye contact and look as if they may be interested in whatever it is you're advertising). Sudoku. Calculate really large, complex numbers in ur head. Visually trace patterns you see in nature... I do some of this stuff (especially the license plates thing) cuz I suffer from OCD.

Sing songs in your head or walk you way through a past holiday, job, course, anything, again in yuor head. I like to relive time I've spent working abroad, remembering where I went, what I ate, who I met etc. Keeps me going for hours.

Why don't you imagine what each passer by would look like naked? I suppose most of them would make you cringe, but some would not!

Or why not try singing! Sing loudly and happily! I'm sure you would be more difficult to ignore then!
